Rotations at Lehigh Valley Hospital-17th Street

Anesthesia Rotation

The Anesthesia Rotation consists of a minimum of 70 hours in the Ambulatory Surgical Unit and Operating Rooms. The resident reports each morning to the Anesthesiologist on-call and follows his/her direction for the session. Prior to starting this rotation residents will have received virtual training in IV insertion.

Objectives of Anesthesia Rotation
Your clinical experience will include:
  • pre-anesthetic evaluation
  • venipuncture
  • administration of IV fluids and medications
  • intubation and maintaining the patient’s airway
  • delivery of the anesthetic agents
  • post-anesthetic evaluation
  • documentation of patient progress on the anesthesia record
  • observation of any anesthetic emergencies.
Didactic training will include pre-operative evaluation, assessment of the effect of pharmacolgic agents, venipuncture technique and administration of IV agents, patient monitoring, anesthetic induction and intubation, administration of anesthetic agents, prevention and treatment of anesthetic emergencies, and assessment of patient recovery from anesthesia.

Family Practice Rotation

This rotation consists of 36 hours with the Family Practice residents and attendings. The dental resident will report to the Family Health Center each day and meet with the senior resident. Daily activities include the AM report, rounds with residents at the Cedar Crest site, and lectures.

Objectives of Family Practice Rotation
Upon completion of this rotation the resident will be able to:
  • list all rounds, lectures and conferences attended
  • describe in detail all patients assigned
  • perform and document a complete history and physical examination on patients admitted during the rotation
  • recognize significant deviations from normal health
  • list the indications for and interpretation of various laboratory studies
  • write progress notes in the patient chart utilizing the SOAP format.

Emergency Room Rotation

The emergency room rotation consists of 47 hours in the ER under the direct supervision of the Emergency Department attendings. This will enable residents to anticipate, diagnose, and treat medical emergencies that may occur during dental treatment.

Objectives of Emergency Department Rotation
At the completion of this rotation the resident will be able to:
  • Identify hospital protocol in treating emergency patients
  • Discuss and describe management of oral trauma and infections
  • Discuss protocols for treatment of medical emergencies including triage, history and physical examination, diagnostic tests and treatment rendered.
  • Describe a code blue situation
  • Have the skills to support a patient’s respirations and/or circulation due to systemic collapse
  • List all conferences/lectures attended during this rotation.
